Progress Report
Due February 24.
following my proposal, I am creating a Christian Moral App which will be used to help Youth Christians be able to discern what is right from wrong based on their Christian belief.
Progress:
Design:
the design's style has been pinpointed. But there are still some modifications to be made before prototypes are drawn and designed.
Content:
Since the proposal of my project, I have began looking for church pastors, reverands and mature christians to help with this project.
Last week, I was able to book an appointment with my church Senior Reverand, and he has agreed to provide some feedback regarding some tough questions. The method he said he will be using will be with Christian Faith Discernment.
I have set up a few questions to ask (which can be found below). The Senior reverand at my church had asked me to think about those questions from a Christian perspective first.
I have also asked a few fellow mature Christians to help with this discerning of right and wrong from a Christian perspective. I am also able to answer these questions (before giving these to pastors and reverands to look at) as I was born to a Christian family and have been an "official Christian" for 6-7 years, because of this I do have some knowledge and understanding of "the Christian perspective". There will also be bible verses to support the arguments as well.
The Bible verses for the theme for this "Discerning" Christian App:
"Everything is permissible"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"—but not everything is constructive.
1 Corinthians 10:23
"Everything is permissible for me"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"—but I will not be mastered by anything.
1 Corinthians 6:12
Questions:
Investment:
1. What’s the difference between long term investment and day-trading? Are we only allowed to make long term investment?
There are those who oppose investment in the stock market, they believe that it is a form of gambling. Because since stocks are brought in the hope (not guarantee) that they will increase in value, since there are risks involved, hence it is a form of gambling.
First of all, every financial decision involves risk (Even saving account in the bank). Therefore we have to understand the fundamental differences between legitimate investments and gambling. Investment is the hope of gaining a profit through a period of time and requires wise decision making over luck. Whereas gambling is the hope of gaining a profit instantly and requires luck over wise decision making and effort.
Proverbs 28:20 says “a faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.” This speaks against the “get-rich-quick” mentality. Looking at investment as a long-term plan for the future is good planning, but trying to make a fortune overnight is not. Therefore day-trading is like a form of gambling.
Why does God displease about the eagerness to get rich? Simply because it opens up a gateway towards temptation and into many harmful and foolish lust of material desires (1 Tim: 9). As Jesus said in Luke 16: 13, you cannot serve two masters (God and money) at the same time. This mentality will drive you further from God.

update on February 28 2010
2. With the mentality of gaining money you must not invest as this is not pleasing to God.
In God's eye, gaining money is not a problem. (He even bless people with material goods in the bible). But in contrast, the over desire or reliance on money is not pleasing to God. The core issue of money (or material goods) is that it drives us away from the love of God towards the love of material goods. Another two things to consider is the way of how we make the money and how we spend the money.
3. As long as you can bear the risk of investing, investment (even day-trading) is totally ok.
Risk is only one of the factors put into the consideration of investing. There are other factors that should also be considered. Such as the motivation of investing, the way how you invest, and would investing harm other people etc.
Another thing is that, our view on money is essential in making EVERY decision that involves money. For example, you might think that losing money on investment is like wasting money and people waste money all the time by purchasing something worthless. But the bible’s teaching tells us not to waste money, but use it for good (E.g. helping the needy).
Because Easter is approaching, reverands and pastors are busy, so the remaining bits of the content would be slightly delayed.
4. If I gain money, can I immediately release that stock? Would this become "gambling"?
5. If you have information that a stock will go up, is it ok if you invest with the intention of buying and releaseing immediately (day-trading). Does this count as "gambling"?
Clubbing:
1) Can Christians go clubbing?
- it is ok for Christians to go clubbing, however you need to remember to set a Christian example, drink reasonably know your limits. Most would say it is not that good for Christians to go clubbing because it creates a bad testimony and could affect other's perspective against the Christianity image.
2) Is it okay to be in an environment with music that has anti-Christian values (since we are already bombarded by these messages/songs everyday, it doesn't make a difference...)?
3) Is drinking alcohol in club settings okay?
4) Can Christians engage in a tight dance with an opposite sex at a night club?
Bible Interpretation:
1. Who hardened Pharaoh’s heart?
2. What is the unforgivable sin?

The Ten Commandments:
The Ten Commandments
(this is the "original" most commonly used New International Version)
1 And God spoke all these words:
2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
3 "You shall have no other gods before [a] me.
4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
13 "You shall not murder.
14 "You shall not commit adultery.
15 "You shall not steal.
16 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
The Modern version based on "The Message" Version of the Holy Bible:
1-2 God spoke all these words: I am God, your God,
who brought you out of the land of Egypt,
out of a life of slavery.
3 No other gods, only me.
4-6 No carved gods of any size, shape, or form of anything whatever, whether of things that fly or walk or swim. Don't bow down to them and don't serve them because I am God, your God, and I'm a most jealous God, punishing the children for any sins their parents pass on to them to the third, and yes, even to the fourth generation of those who hate me. But I'm unswervingly loyal to the thousands who love me and keep my commandments.
7 No using the name of God, your God, in curses or silly banter; God won't put up with the irreverent use of his name.
8-11 Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Work six days and do everything you need to do. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to God, your God. Don't do any work—not you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your servant, nor your maid, nor your animals, not even the foreign guest visiting in your town. For in six days God made Heaven, Earth, and sea, and everything in them; he rested on the seventh day. Therefore God blessed the Sabbath day; he set it apart as a holy day.
12 Honor your father and mother so that you'll live a long time in the land that God, your God, is giving you.
13 No murder.
14 No adultery.
15 No stealing.
16 No lies about your neighbor.
17 No lusting after your neighbor's house—or wife or servant or maid or ox or donkey. Don't set your heart on anything that is your neighbor's.

update March 9 2010
Design:
first set of designs
content:
- some content still needs to be written and proofread by pastorial figures
- answers to questions will continuously be updated
technical:
as predicted in my proposal, I am having a hard time finding flash tutorials to make the flash prototype of this app.
Research on usability:
Geldof, M (2007). Usability and Internationalization. Global and Local User Interfaces. 4560.
I was able to read a few chapters from this book and have learned about the challenges that each country faces regarding usability and technology interfaces. The below website gives the same idea of what this book mentioned but it has a cleaner explanation.
Neilson, J. (2007). Usability of Websites for Teenagers Retrieved from http://www.useit.com/alertbox/teenagers.html
based on the above website, by Jakob Neilson, who is an expert in web usability, the article is beneficial to me in a sense that I am able to grasp the concept, this is about a website's usability for teens, and I am creating an app, but through this article, I was able to learn a few things regarding usability:
1. teens like to look at "cool-looking" graphics (which help me determine my design for this app)
2. they like relatively modest and clean design (which means my app cannot have too many fancy visual elements)
3. teens have a low patience level, they do not like to wait (apps are good in a sense compared to websites is that their content loads faster)
4. teens do not like to read a lot nor like tiny fonts (concepts must be straight to the point, content will be chunked here so the message is direct and up to the point, there will be an available link to a longer version for those who want to read more )
I found this chart of the website which I found really useful when I am creating this app:
Animation
and
sound effects
Mine sweeping
for links
Advertising Scrolling Reading
Kids
Teens
Adults
Key:
Enjoyable, interesting, and appealing, or users can easily adjust to it.
Users might appreciate it to some extent, but overuse can be problematic.
Users dislike it, don't do it, or find it difficult to operate.

Testing/Usability survey- a summary
A Survey & interview was conducted these past semester and the app usability these past two weeks (towards the target audience):
I was only able to reach out to 30 (who had an iPod touch or iPhone or a smart phone), all surveys and interview processes were taken and recorded in a church setting.
design &
1. what is your favourite colour?
answers received: purple, red, blue, pink, black, sleek looking colours, metallic
2. for applications what is your favourite styles?
answers received: anything that looks "cool" (after talking to that person "cool" means sleek), not too colourful ones,
3. Do you know the ten commandments? can you tell me what they are?
- yes (10 Christians were able to prove the correct list)
- 20 were not able to, they struggled trying to memorize all of them at once
4. Do you think you have enough Christian moral values? why? why not?
yes- I think I know enough (13)
interviewer: can you answer some of these questions? (shows question sheet based on previous)
result: they were able to answer some but were not able to provide good explanations as to why that is the answer
no- I think I know some but I cannot say I know enough, there are some uncertainties with some (5)
no- I am not familiar with them at all, cause when I first converted my church did not provide any training in this area) (7)
no- I don't have many CHristian friends who I could share these things with... (4)
no- one can never learn enough of these cause these scenarios and situations change constantly (1)
5. Where do you go if you have a moral question you cannot answer:
- ask Pastoral staff (Reverands & pastors, church friends)
- don't know
- read the Bible
6. Is the Bible easy to interepretate?
- no (29)- the language is hard, the situations seems kind of... weird, the setting is different from mine's, its hard to relate the bible stories with my "real" life
-yes(1)- how hard can it be?
7. What is your favourite app? and why?
- facebook, Mafia Wars, wikipedia, Go Green!
- I can interact with others with these apps
- I can learn from wikipedia, it is a good reference guide and it is convinent to bring around, (some with iPod touches complained that the wikipedia app didn't work without wifi, and that could be very "frustrating" and "annoying")
- they are free
- I could get something out from them
- they constantly update themselves
Usability:
explain how the app works:
would you be interested?
yes (28)-that would be awesome! they should have more of these in the app store
no (2) - its too much to do, just go and ask a pastor cause you know there's something called emailing
(I explained to the two "no" people that sometimes you cannot email and get an immediate answer because pastoral staff are usually busy so they changed their answers to "maybe")
what do you think these pictures mean?
All of them got them right
if I were to access the ten commandments where would I go?
- they all got them right
other notes:
some were confused as to how the random generator can generate different "morals of the day" without a wifi connection (which I explained that these were all predownloaded with the app, and each update that happens every 2 weeks will give them new ones to collect)
some complained and were afraid they would need to read a lot of stuff so in order to accommodate: I have chunked out the answers so they were shorter and than provide a section for a longer version of the answer in case they needed a deeper and more throughout explanation.

name, design and other updates
in order for the app to be more "Christianize" the name has been changed to the "Christian- Know How to Discern App" As discern is the correct name for this type of activity.
all the "scenes" for each have been designed, you can see the designs from the swf file below.
technical, I have been having problems with the technical, am trying to fix up the glitches in the actionscript (using actionscript 3.0)
the glitch version has been posted here: Christian app.swf the first buttons work, but somehow there is an undefined problem and would not link to the "forum", daily, library, etc.
thus in this version, I've decided to export all the scenes to a movie clip, however, there seems to be more problems: Christian appv2.swf as none of the buttons work and the scenes just jump from place to place.
following my proposal, I am creating a Christian Moral App which will be used to help Youth Christians be able to discern what is right from wrong based on their Christian belief.
